Types of Archery Sights
Gone are the days of
using a match as a sight for your shooting. Some purists believe shooting with a sight is almost cheating.
Regardless, sights make it more likely to hit the target by using them rather than shooting without them. This
accuracy is important for young archers to try to learn their stroke and form. Optimum accuracy is also important in hunting because it increases the
chances of a quick kill which is best for the hunter and the animal.
Makeup of Archery
Sights
Basic archery sights
are very cheap and relatively easy to use. They tend to consist of
a number of pins. Most pins can be moved up or down to adjust for
elevation and wind. On the lower end, pin sights tend to have brass
pins and are encased in an aluminum frame; however, as you get more expensive models they will likely have
frames that are of a stronger aluminum or a rigid plastic. Also,
fiber optics are introduced at the very high end to add greater accuracy.
In addition, some
archery sights are designed for hunting on tree stands to address the issue of shooting down at the
animal. These types of archery sights give you better sighting for
firing your bow.
Prices & Companies
Prices have a wide
disparity depending on the type of archery sight and its purpose. Prices range from $30 for basic pin sights and
can easily go up to $200. Popular archery sight companies include Copper John, Spott Hogg, Trophy Ridge, Archers
Choice, Montana Blackgold, Toxonics, Sure-Loc, Scout Mountain, Savage Systems, Impact, Truglo, Sight
Master, Cobra, and Extreme.
