Wooden Arrows
These days there is much discussion about carbon
shaft arrows or aluminum shaft ones; however, wooden arrows
are often neglected in present day discussions about archery
arrows. This is
unfortunate because it has served archers well for
generations from its very beginning as a tool for survival
and not sport.
Some even feared that wooden arrows could become
obsolete.
However, a wave of interest in traditional archery has led
to a rebirth in interest in wooden
arrows.
Makeup of Wooden
Arrows
There are essentially two types of wooden arrows
available: (1) stock arrows and (2) primitive
arrows. The
main difference is in design as primitive arrows tend to be
hand-crafted based on techniques from years
past. Wood
shafts generally are made from a number of different
woods. The
most common are Port Orford Cedar, Pine, Spruce, Ash,
Birch, Maple and Redwood with Port Orford Cedar as far
and away the most popular. Most arrows can be
either purchased with unfinished grain or with several
coats of lacquer on them.
Advantages of Wooden
Arrows
They tend to be cheaper than other arrows made of
other materials (carbon, aluminum, fiberglass,
etc.). Another
advantage is that they are relatively easy to
make. For those
so inclined, you can actual build your own wood arrows to
your exact specifications. Although this is not a
benefit for all archers, it does provide the craftsman with
a direct influence on the arrows design.
Disadvantages of Wooden
Arrows
Wood has a reputation for providing inconsistent
shooting because of the grain differences from one arrow to
the next. This
results in slight differences in weight and
spine. In
addition, they can be subject to warping in extreme
conditions as wood does not respond well to
humidity.
Finally, wooden arrows should be avoided when using high
speed compound bows as there is a risk they will split while
shooting them.
Prices & Companies
A dozen wooden stock arrows have a price range of
$30 to $90. In
addition, a dozen primitive arrows have a price range of
$100 to $300.
However, you can usually get reduced prices when buying in
bulk. Popular
companies that make wooden arrows include: Hexshaft Arrows,
Traditional Archery Supply, Old South Arrows, Keystone
Country Store, and Three Rivers Archery Supply.
This information on
wooden arrows should help you find the wooden arrows that
will work for best for your group. If you have not
considered traditional archery, you should definitely at
least give it try. If you do not get bitten by “traditional
archery” bug, at least you will develop a further
appreciation of how far the archery industry has
developed.
